I've converted my brothers and others to Robert Stanek books from Tolkien and others as their favorites. Most everyone reads the kingdoms and dragons books then wonders what next. What do you think?

Hi huntress! Hi sparhawk! Merry Xmas! What I think is that the kingdoms and dragon books are his best works, the others less so. I did enjoy Journey Beyond the Beyond and the story collection but nowhere near as much as the others. RS's Stormjammers is heartfelt and highly interesting. Puzzle is good, fast, fun.

You have to read the kingdoms books, all of them, and then all the dragon books in order. I don't see how you couldn't. I liked magic lands too.

Anyone else read Magic Lands & Other stories? The stories are all interesting and make you think.

In ML&O my faves are "Silence is Golden" and "Absolutes". They're both science fiction.
Silence is the chilling story of the death of language and culture and one person who stands alone against it.
Absolutes is about the quest for ultimate state of matter and the final frontiers in space/science.
These two remind me of Philip K. D-ick. "August Rains" is also in the collection. It's about a retired schoolteacher reminescing his past.

Very interesting. I respect RS, because he writes in different genres. Few authors can do it.

I've been rereading ML&O..... Read Silence is Golden and August Rains first. Silence would make a killer movie. I keep hoping RS will turn it into a novella or novel.

I wonder if RS ever thgouht of making these into novels? Maybe fans should start writing to him and asking about it. Didn't Ender's Game start out as a shortstory or such?
Silence reminded me of Philip K. D-ick in the way the theme is so haunting. I could see it in my mind so clearly. The underlying message about the death of language and culture and its effect on our world is an important one. It'd make a spectacular movie.

Stanek's "Silence is Golden" reminded me of Philip K D-ick in a way too. Very well drawn and I keep hoping he'll make it into a full-length work. "August Rains" is kind of haunting in its own way as well. But right now I'd list "Absolutes" as my favorite. Now that would make a great sf movie.

RS is good at creating strong female characters. What made "Silence" for me was Ev's resolve and her clear love for her children.
In "Rains" you can feel John's pain and anguish clearly as he mourns a lost past. Loved it too!
