Flaming, or the posting of decidely hostile statements, has been around since the earliest days of the Internet. The nature of the Internet makes it easy to post malicious statements about anyone. Malicious statements can be mean spirited. Or intended to cause damage to the targeted person's reputation. Often, a flame is an angry reply to another's statement by someone who is hurt, angry or enraged for whatever reason. In rare cases, flaming can turn into something far more sinister: a campaign of hatred against a group or an individual. This type of flaming is a form of cyberstalking when it is conducted against adults and cyberbullying when it is conducted against children and teens. Several organizations have been started to stop cyberbullying and cyberstalking. You can learn more at www.stopcyberbullying.org/what_is_cyberbullying_exactly.htmlThis is important to Robert Stanek readers because a group of individuals have been posting flames containing untrue, malicious statements about Robert Stanek all across the Internet for the past 5 years. If you're not a Robert Stanek fan, this is important to you too because it can and does happen to other favorite authors. When you see malicious postings, you need to recognize it for what it is, and report it.

I would add:
In dealing with these, you need to separate the pranksters from the huksters.
Some of the flames posted about Robert Stanek, probably meant as pranks, have statements such as "The worst book ever. Avoid at all costs." These prank posts are designed to get someone's angry reaction or get them to not want to buy the books. Lots of these kinds of posts are in forums of other authors and on review sites. These types of posts are bothersome, but if you understand them for what they are, they can't do any harm.
Other flames are designed to do damage to Mr. Stanek's reputation. Alone these flames wouldn't carry much weight but the individuals involved have made such postings in dozens of sites and dozens of forums using a variety of aliases. Forum and site owners should clean up these types of posts as they add nothing of value, and only help to create a hostile environment for readers/fans of the author.

I am very happy that in the USA there are laws against cyberstalking. I think that the people who are damaging the reputation of Mr. Stanek are criminals.

I'm convinced the flooding of Robert Stanek's books with nasty reviews over the past few months has once again to do with movie news. Take a look at KE1 reviews on B+N or KMT and KE1 reviews on Amazon to see all the nastiness going back to early in the year. Robert Stanek's books are pretty great, so I've never understood this.

One of RS's biggest detractors seems to be Jason Gianchinno who self published 3 books and now publishes under his own press (Bellisimo) using a pen name (Jason Rider). Jason was outed on Amazon when one of his fake accounts (TC Bookbug) was used to attack RS.
That Jason being behind many of the 2005 to present attacks on RS seems likely and the primary factor seems to be jealousy. Jason also has ties to both Amazon and Audible where many of the attacks on RS have occured.
In addition to tracing attacks to Jason, I believe I've also traced some of the earliest attacks on RS back to J H Sweet. One of J H Sweets Amazon aliases is e.e. rowan another is R. Rowan.
e.e. rowan was used to promote J H Sweet's books. R. Rowan was used to post nasty reviews of RS books. Both go back to 2004.

It's sad that other indie author attacks Mr. Stanek. Indie authors should help each other.

Yes, especially with how much RS tries to help other indie authors.

A correction to what dragonlord said earlier. It doesn't look like it is Jason Gianchinno behind the attacks on RS lately, it is. Jason Gianchinno owns and operates Bellissima Publishing. He self-publishes his own books as Jason Rider and books of others. I don't see this as a problem, however, Jason and his associates run around the Internet bad mouthing other indie publishers and authors, and that's what's wrong.
On Amazon, Jason Gianchinno uses the fake name Leonardo DaVinci to bash RS. All the while this guy is using dozens of fake accounts to promote his books and spread hate of other indie publishers and authors. Anytime anyone on Amazon mentions RS, he posts nasty comments, meanwhile his associates are plugging his book like crazy in reviews and lists.
What they're doing to RS is criminal. I don't doubt Jason's attacks on RS go back several years. I'm going to spend the next 20 years of my life putting Jason Gianchinno and his cronies out of business.

internet flame wars are the most pointless use of the many opportunities provided by the internet... people think they're safe to do it because they're behind their keyboard saying it. I'm sure the flamers wouldnt say stuff like that to Robert Stanek's face. People need to grow up and realize they can't destroy someone's opportunities because they are better or more sucessfull than them, and instead of turning their jealousy into rage and destroying someone's sucess, they need to compliment each other and learn from each other. I certainly don't see Robert Stanek going around flaming other people's works because they are doing it to him.
