Been watching Whedon's Dollhouse and in the back of my mind I keep thinking I know the story theme from somewhere, I know I do, I know I do.
Watching last Friday's episode, A Doll in the House of Love, I'm sitting there and my jaw drops about 49 minutes in. Dewitt's second's just been beaten and discovered he's smiling and Echo asks him why he's smiling. He says he's smiling because she's going to get erased and she doesn't get it and then he adds I'm smiling because one day you're going to erase them and they won't see it coming.
I'm like holy nuts that's straight from Silence at the end with Ev. Ev gets cleaned but she's not afraid. She knows the director is going get cleaned and then the rest are going to get cleaned and none of them are going to see it coming. Freaking Deja Vu!
Absolutes has a scene with Krzystof, sitting there grinning when they've doing him in because he knows what's going to happen to those who are doing him in.
The parrallels between the scenes in Silence and Absolutes are purposeful since they're in the same story collection. The scene in Dollhouse is too similar to be coincidence. Is Whedon a Stanek fan? I would have to say he is since he liked the concepts so much he created a tv series around them.

Heya Grim is in and nice to see and I'm thinking someone like Whedon is always reading up and comers like Stanek to see what all the buzz is about and get the secret mojo. Scene's like these most definitely are Stanek's secret mojo. Whedon has to be a Stanek fan or else he wouldn't creates scenes and stories with such close parallels.
Ev > Echo Cleaning > Erasing Minder > Handler UFC > Dollhouse Silencing > Attic Silenced > Mind sucked Majority-1 > Government agencies

"Freaking Dejavu" loving that saying Grim. I wouldn't disagree with anything you've said. Lots of different things inspire and serve as sources for new ideas. Wouldn't be surprised to find Whedon's copy of Absolutes & Other Stories has dogears and highlights.

Dollhouse is too over the top shtick for me but my brothers are into that kind of thing. You know Angel, Buffy, that stuff. BTW they also like RS. HUGE fans STILL. Whedon probably snagged RS basic concept / idea because it was so friggin good to pass on. The central idea from Silence is VERY cool when you think about how it twists back on itself.

Doll House over the top? Kind of but it's fun too. Angel, Buffy are classics. Good even in reruns.

Stanek doesn't get enough love. He's got many great things like this in his books. Loving the similiarity in the themes but likely coincidence. Unless whedon read it and said like 'whoa dude this is awsum'

As someone who reads a lot of fantasy and ya it's easy to tell where ideas for certain things come from. Stephen King and Rowling both borrow loads but they make the things they borrows their own. Someone like Whedon probably does to. My writing professor keeps telling me their are no new ideas or new stories, only new ways of telling old ideas and stories. She's probably right but I still hate her.
