I'll test the waters here 1st--I'm reading the Dark Tower series. It's hard to explain but good.

I've enjoyed reading Stephen King's books. For those that haven't read the Dark Tower series the books are
The Gunslinger The Drawing of the Three The Waste Lands Wizard and Glass Wolves of the Calla
Wolves of the Calla is the newest one. With Song of Susannah and The Dark Tower being the final two books.

I will probably check out the Gunslinger later on in the summer.

What is in the Dark Tower series that makes everyone like it?

Stephen King just sells because of his name, nothing else. His ideas are riddled with cliches that jump out from the page and his ideas are, like your favourite shirt, ironed out and worn again.

Does anyone know what the difference between the original gunslinger and the "revised and expanded" edition?

Knowing King, I would say a number of pages. I think it was just fleshing out his story by going back to it and adding clues to the details he added later.

Since I've now read the original and the revised edition, I can say it's hardly an addition of pages. King has revised to make stronger ties between the first book and the rest of the series. The revised edition is a stronger, better read.
For anyone just starting with The Dark Tower, the series is now complete:
1. The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, Book 1)
2. The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, Book 2)
3. The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, Book 3)
4. Wizard and Glass (The Dark Tower, Book 4)
5. Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower, Book 5)
6. Song of Susannah (The Dark Tower, Book 6)
7. The Dark Tower (The Dark Tower, Book 7)
I've heard of a possible 8th book written as a graphic novel.
