Yes, great analyses, dragonlord. I think that what is similar between Narnia, Ruin Mist and LotR are the fascinating characters and the various and powerful creatures.

So true fascinating characters + powerful creatures + great stories plus Tolkien Lewis Stanek all create worlds you just can't get enough of. thanks sparhark about the blog. I totally haven't checked it and it was a nice surprise like RS gave us a gift for the holidays. I totally appreciated it cause I know how busy he has to be shows how much he appreciates his readers

Back on track... the comparisons to Tolkien and Lewis are right on. He seems to have achieved a perfect balance between Tolkien and Lewis as far as descriptiveness, he's also created a magnificent fantasy world.

And he did it alone, without help of big publishers! Amazing!

I love Ruin Mist too especially all the fantastic places and how it seems so real. With Tolkien I never got so deeply into the world as with Stanek. With Lewis I always liked the characters but not so much the world. Stanek's worlds better.

Ruin Mist is deeper and truer than Narnia but not as deep as middle earth - not yet at least - but it may become so. Its a lot of history and intense.

Much deeper than Narnia for sure and I do prefer Ruin Mist to Narnia in every way. It's more magical. Like Lewis, Stanek favors shorter works than long doorstoppers. Tolkien's works are fairly short as well so there is a balance.

Yes, the creatures *do* help to make the world what it is. I'd add about the characters that there is a wide cast with many you love almost instantly, also a lot of baddies that you can hate.

Like I said Stanek's world is just plain better. Ruin Mist already is many times deeper and more rich than Narnia, and I can't wait until the next books come out to learn even more about it. The wide variety of creatures and varied cast do help too.
I'd add too about characters not being painted in only black and white. The characters act like real people because that's what Robert said, he sees them as real people with real lives, hopes, dreams, the whole thing.
