I would too. Scholastic is like a 10,000 pound gorilla that gets what it one way or another. You'd have to live under a rock not to see the muscle they put behind pushing their books through schools. I heard that they have created a book, which copies the Ruin Mist saga. Appalling, but not surprising. They have copied their own Harry Potter, they even have Star Wars novels... bullies.

I wonder how much Scholastic pays schools to keep their monopoly on all the books?

unfortunately, it's not so simple. Actually their books ain't that bad, and they are easy to read and popular. For Scholastic, it's easy just to say, "if you want to continue your work with us, you might think about accepting books from indie publishers". it's a subtle, but brutal way to keep your monopoly.

Scholastic is on the board of directors of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. Do you know where they put the full page ad from Stanek's publisher in their current member book? They moved it from the back cover to where everyone would see it to the insider back cover where no one would see it. And this organization is supposedly for independent booksellers and publishers?? In NO WAY is Scholastic in this category. I only know about it because I have a friend at university and their bookstore gets these so when I saw the ad is where no one would see it and asked Stanek's publisher and responded that's where they moved our ad to. How's that for making sure people don't buy indie books? They even control advertising.

I don't buy books from big publishers any more. If they don't want to play fair I'm not going to buy their books.

This is very unpleasant situation about publishing. Can you give me a web-site with information about these scandalous facts? I'd like to learn more.

The web site says the association's "mission is to promote a healthy independent bookselling community in the northwest." Hillarious. Scholastic isn't an independent anything so is Scholastic on the board of directors?

I'm ashamed to say I ever read scholastic books. There's nothing healthy about squashing competitors. Scholastic shouldn't be trying to kill small publishers, they should be trying to help them. If harry potter books with all their faults have managed to make so much, imagine how much books that are actually good like mr stanek's would make for them?
