There are many fantasy novels, and which is more surprising, many of them are good. Still, it's a large gap between "good book" and "great book". I think that the main difference is the atmosphere. In the "Dark Elf" series by R. A. Salvatore, for example, there are a lot of battles, interesting characters and dark, magnifecent world. So these are good books, quick read. But "The Kingdoms & The Elves of the Reaches" are, in my opinion, much superior, great books. And it's not only because of the hearthstopping moments in it (like the battle between Vilmos and the ghastly Wolmerelle), or the interesting, extremely likable characters, the many subplots or the intriguing magic system. It's not even to all this things together. What I liked in RS books so much is the atmosphere of the books, the way author is telling you the story. I felt like I'm IN this world and I just loved. I want to say, the atmosphere in the book is wonderful, like an old faerie tale, told to you by a great storyteller who is also your friend. You understand what I mean?

Wow I totally get it. the wolmerelle are the best. It got me totally like the whole vangar forest chapter was like total suspense. one of the reasons i like the books is because it has mystery, suspense, action. in some places its like a fantasy thriller. others you are puzle through mystery.

I agree with Sparhawk. R.S has an unique style of writing. It is very intricate and compelling yet intresting and satifising.

For nothing, Supernerd. SinisterShadow, you are right here. No other author can create in me, at least, this magical feeling I feel while I'm reading R.S. It's great.
