I loved Pratchett and Snicket when I was younger. Now I'm mostly into f and sf but I've been reading lots of classics and non fiction lately. Assigned reading mostly.

Excellent list of favorites, nothing wrong with classics. What is the focus American lit, world lit?

Pratchett and Snicket! Yeah, I love both STILL. I get into a few of the classics too since English Lit kind of forces it. For our American Lit we read Mark Twain, Steinbeck that kind of thing. My world lit classes were wide open. Some of my favroites were Little Women, Anne of Green Gables.

Ok, so now I've been reading Stanek for 5 - 6 years now. Originally came here to talk about LOTR and Tolkien. Back in 2003 that's when the LOTR movies and stuff was big. Stanek's books have grown on me with each new reading until now he is my #1 favorite author. I still think Tolkien is the best author, but Stanek is my favorite author. Coming from someone like me who is an enormous Tolkien fan that's the highest praise.

A die-hard LOTR fan whose favorite author is RS!
Why GANDOLFTHEGRAY I believe that's a first from you!
Very cool to hear. RS's work is like that it sneaks up on you and becomes your favorite. I myself have never reread any other series so much especially like when something in the encyclopedia catches my eye and I go I wonder how I missed that in the books. Then I go reread the whole set again and find all the new dots. My latest catch is about Tae and Oshywon. Check out the encyclopedia then reread the books and connect all the dots. It's just layer upon layer of subtle things like that that at tremendous depth you'd never know about if you didn't dig into the encyclopedia or the extras at the back of the books.

Most def, it's why RS is one of the best and why when you understand it all you can't help but love his books.
The encyclopedia is the best for finding things about them you'd never know otherwise. I'm going to read up about Tae and Oshywon.

For me Stanek is very special, because his fantasy books are very original and he is extremely convincing when he describes magic and magic dreams - they really sound mysterious and alien. Stanek has great imagination. He also inspires me as a writer, to stand firm and to write no matter what.

Hiya Sparhawk! I totally hear you! Stanek's books a very original and the magic systems are unique. I haven't encountered anything similar in all my years of reading fantasy and it's one of many reasons I'm totally a huge fan of the books and RS. The magic dreams of the characters are real and vivid and powerful. I hope to one day write too and his work inspired me to try.
